New geopolitical challenges in the Balkans
Abstract
The Balkans can become a geopolitical site where rival forces can fight for influence with different socio-economic and political models of the international order. The European Union has assured the region that the implementation of democratic principles is the only way to overcome the problems experienced by the political forces. Any further expansion of NATO is being developed by the Kremlin as a threat to Russian security and, at the same time, they are less disappointed by the ambitions of the Western Balkan countries to join the EU. For the United States, the Western Balkans are part of central Europe. The EU and the United States support the region to continue its efforts for democratic reforms. This region is crucial for Europe's stability. Partnership with China is not necessarily driven by higher politics, but rather by intense two-way economic exchanges, cooperation in the field of climate change and people-to-people contacts.
