Preprint Policy

Politics & Security supports the early and open dissemination of research.

Posting a preprint is permitted. Authors may deposit a preprint of their manuscript on a recognised preprint server (for example SSRN, arXiv, SocArXiv, or an institutional repository) at any time, including before, during and after peer review. Posting a preprint does not constitute prior publication and does not prejudice consideration by this journal.

Disclosure at submission. Authors must state in the cover letter, and in the "Comments for the Editor" field of the submission form, whether a preprint of the manuscript exists, and must provide its permanent URL or DOI. Failure to disclose an existing preprint may be treated as a breach of publication ethics.

Which version may be posted. Authors may post the submitted version (the preprint) and the accepted manuscript at any time. The final published version (Version of Record) may also be posted immediately, as all articles in this journal are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence with no embargo period.

Linking after publication. Once the article is published, authors are asked to update the preprint record with the full citation and the DOI of the published article, so that readers are directed to the Version of Record.

Media coverage of preprints. Authors are free to discuss preprinted work publicly. Authors should make clear in any public communication that the work has not yet completed peer review, until such time as it is published in this journal.

Reviewer confidentiality is unaffected. The existence of a public preprint does not release reviewers from the confidentiality obligations set out in the journal's peer review and ethics policies.
